According to Christopher Tolkien, the writer’s son, John Tolkien always had a weakness for “northern” versification and repeatedly used accented verse, stylizing some of his works as ancient Germanic poetry. This is how “The Lay of the Children of Hurin”, “The New Song of the Volsungs”, “The New Song of Gudrun” and other experiments of this kind were born. Based on the world-famous legend of Lancelot and Guinevere, the poem “The Death of Arthur”, which began in 1934 , remained unfinished due to the development of the world of The Lord of the Rings. This book contains both the poem itself and an analysis of John Tolkien's sketches, revealing the author's intention, as well as an article about the connection of this text with The Silmarillion.
