The Diary of the world-famous prose writer and playwright Witold Gombrowicz (1904–1969) is an outstanding work of Polish literature of the 20th century. Gombrowicz is both the author and the hero of “The Diary”: he struggles with his personal problems as with world problems; he is the philosophizing Ego, determining its place among other “I”s; he is a physical being immersed in the world of things, suffering pain, consumed by passions. How to preserve the creator, the likeness of God, within oneself, avoiding the captivity of the forms prepared by society? How to remain yourself in a situation of being forced to serve “principles” (faiths, kings, fatherlands, everyday truths)? “The Diary” of V. Gombrowicz is a reference book for the European intellectual. So in Russia, during the times of the most dramatic changes, even small excerpts from it were in demand by literary magazines as a kind of enzyme that accelerates thought. This is the first edition of the Diary in Russian.
