Gombrowicz excited the reader with all sorts of tomfoolery. He played a game of endless provocations, driving the reader into a corner, forcing him to admit the most unpleasant truths. Prone to philosophizing, but completely alien to any reverence for university philosophy, Gombrowicz did not feel much respect for literature either. He despised literature as a pompous ritual and, even turning to it, tried to get rid of all its pre-established rules.
