For the first time in Russia, a novel by the greatest Jewish prose writer of the 20th century, Nobel laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer (1904–1991) is being published. “Shadows over the Hudson” was published in Yiddish in 1957–1958 in the New York newspaper “Forverts”; translated into English, the novel was published as a separate book only in 1998, after the author’s death. The novel takes place in the USA in the late 40s of the last century. Businessman Boris Makover, an emigrant from Poland, is trying to remain an observant Jew in the face of a massive departure from religion and the traditional way of life of many of his peers and the younger generation of his family. Makover's daughter leaves her husband and unsuccessfully tries to find love, his nephew abandons the faith of his ancestors for the religion of communism. The novel's backdrop is the trauma of the Holocaust, the struggle for Israeli independence, and the conflict between the idealized dream of communism and the reality of Stalin's tyranny in the Soviet Union.
