The novel “The Estate” by Nobel laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer (1904–1991) was published in Yiddish in the New York newspaper “Forverts” from 1953 to 1955. The novel takes place in Poland and covers several decades of the second half of the 19th century. Decades have passed since the uprising of 1863, the heroes of the novel have aged, generations are changing, and the new generation has new life values and aspirations. There is no former unity among the Jews. Someone is trying to achieve prosperity at any cost, someone is worried about the fate of their people, and someone is adopting revolutionary ideas and is ready to sacrifice themselves and others, rushing into the fight for the unclearly understood bright future of humanity. Only time will tell who is right, but perhaps any choice will sooner or later lead to defeat...
