Isaac Bashevis Singer (1904–1991), Nobel Prize laureate, was born in Poland, into a family of hereditary rabbis. In 1935 he emigrated to the USA. All of Singer’s work grows out of his own life experience, the life of the Jewish quarters familiar to him, and Jewish folklore. His heroes are people who survived the Holocaust, people whom fate scattered around the world, deprived of their homes, relatives, and torn from their usual surroundings. They love and hate, sin and pray, philosophize and laugh at themselves. And they never lose hope.
