The novel “The Estate” by Nobel laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer (1904–1991) was published in Yiddish in the New York newspaper “Forverts” from 1953 to 1955. The novel takes place in Poland and covers several decades of the second half of the 19th century. The Polish uprising of 1863 was brutally suppressed, but the country is on the rise, industry is developing, new factories are being built, and railways are being laid. The inhabitants of Jewish towns are at a crossroads: some are trying to keep up with the rapidly changing world, others are trying to maintain their usual way of life, to remain faithful to traditions and faith. Is there freedom of choice or is everything predetermined from above? To what extent is a person responsible for his actions, what consequences can they lead to? These questions torment the heroes of the novel. It is published in Russian for the first time.
