This volume is the second in the trilogy “The Great Controversy. My fights with Anatoly Karpov” is dedicated mainly to our third and fourth matches (1986 and 1987). The finish of both was incredibly dramatic, and the controversy surrounding these events excited the chess world for a long time. After winning the world crown in November 1985, I had very little time to savor the taste of victory: the rematch started the following summer. According to FIDE rules, approved in 1949, the champion was obliged to defend the title every three years in a match with the winner of the qualifying round. cycle. However, in my case this process was broken. Back in 1977, FIDE, to please Karpov, returned to the rules the rematch clause, which was in effect for only two cycles and abolished in the early 60s. In case of defeat, the champion automatically, without any selection, received the right to play a rematch a year later. Botvinnik took advantage of this right for himself: having defeated Smyslov (1958) and Tal (1961) in rematches, he returned to the throne twice and limited the reign of his “offenders” to one year. To avoid such a fate, I had to win Karpov and in the rematch (London-Leningrad 1986). Despite the fact that we had already played 72 games - the longest match in history (1984/85) and the second match (1985), in which I took the title from Karpov... In a fierce struggle, I managed to win the rematch. But the trials didn’t end there! Despite all our extraordinary matches, the three-year FIDE qualifying cycle remained unchanged, and a year later I had to meet the next contender in a match. It is not surprising that Karpov became my opponent again.
