This volume is dedicated to the twelfth world champion Anatoly Karpov and his historical rival Viktor Korchnoi, their stunningly dramatic struggle for the chess throne, which filled the peculiar vacuum that arose after Fischer's untimely death. Karpov's influence on the development of chess is truly epochal - it was felt to the very end 20th century. But the contribution of Korchnoi, the legendary chess player, who managed to accomplish the seemingly impossible - defeat time, is also enormous. Contrary to all ideas about age limits, this great match and tournament fighter reached his creative peak at 47 years old, surpassing former champions Petrosyan and Spassky. He is the only challenger in history to have played three de facto matches for the world crown and once, in Baguio (1978), almost became world champion. At the same time, being 20 years older than the opponent!
