This volume is dedicated to the twelfth world champion Anatoly Karpov and his historical rival Viktor Korchnoi, their stunningly dramatic struggle for the chess throne, which filled the peculiar vacuum that arose after Fischer's untimely death. Karpov's influence on the development of chess is truly epochal - it was felt to the very end 20th century. But the contribution of Korchnoi, the legendary chess player, who managed to accomplish the seemingly impossible - defeat time, is also enormous.
