Robe-Grillet found his style already in his early novels, which included “The House of Visits,” published in 1961. Here the space of the text is defined using techniques already known to the Russian reader, at least from the “Project for a Revolution in New York.” The author offers the reader a riddle, a rebus, which later turns out to be not a rebus at all, since it does not involve a solution. The heroes of “Date House” are forced to constantly hunt for money, and simply for each other. One of the heroes, apparently, is killed, unless this is the imagination of the owner of the entertainment establishment, the dream of the murderer, or the delirium of the murdered...
