“Romanesques” by Alain Robbe-Grillet, the famous writer, screenwriter and film director, is not a novel or an autobiography in the traditional sense. With some degree of convention, the genre of this work can be defined as “something novel-like,” “conversations about this and that.” But the simplicity of the “French Nabokov”, “ironic Kafka”, “fantasmatic Proust”, as critics often call Robbe-Grillet, is deceptive. Sooner or later, an attentive reader will definitely discover behind her the bottomless depth of mirrors directed at each other and will follow with interest “ self-development" of the text, how, freely passing through styles, schools, eras, this text grows into the thickness of world art and ultimately turns into a genuine encyclopedia of time. In addition to "Romanesques", the volume includes the film novel "Last Year in Marienbad" , on which a wonderful film of the same name was made, and a collection of manifestos “For a New Novel”, translated into Russian for the first time.
