The book presents translations of five gunki-monogatari - tales of revolts and battles. “Records of Masakado”, “Tale of the Land of Mutsu”, “Records of the Three Years War in Oshu”, “Tale of the Troubles of the Hogen Years” and “Records of the Troubles of the Jokyu Years” describe the most important events in the military history of Japan - the pacification of the Masakado rebellion (935- 940), Minamoto campaigns against the Emishi aborigines in the northeast of the country (1051-1062 and 1083-1087), the turmoil of the Hogen years (1156), which weakened the position of the Minamoto clan, the attempt of the ex-emperor Go-Toba to overthrow the Kamakura military government and regain power emperors (1121). Together with “The Tale of the Troubles of the Heiji Years” and “The Tale of the House of Taira,” these texts constitute a complete cycle of narratives about battles involving the Taira and Minamoto military families, later continued by the “Tale of the Great Peace,” created at the end of the 14th century, and are A valuable source on Japanese military history. The translations are based on the oldest versions of military stories that have come down to us. “Records of the Three Years' War in Oshu” and the oldest copy of “The Tale of the Troubles of the Hogen Years” have not previously been translated into European languages.
