The publication contains a transliteration and translation into Russian of one of the most famous Pahlavi works - “The Book of Righteous Viraz” - with a widespread plot about the ascension of the soul and its wanderings in the other world. This volume also includes five other texts, including the most interesting essay “Explanation of Chess and the Invention of Backgammon”, the epic poem “The Legend of the Son of Zarer”, the fable “The Tree of Babel”, “The Instruction of the Sage Oshnar” and the curious text “Khosrow, the son of Kavad, and (his) page.” The presented works demonstrate the diversity of forms and themes of works of Pahlavi literature, and the names of individual characters and some plots of the texts indicate the connection of the literature of medieval Iran with the literatures of the countries of the Middle East and India.
