Chandogya Upanishad (Chandogya Upani?ad IAST) is a Vedic text in Sanskrit, one of the eleven Upanishads of the Mukhya canon. Along with the Jaiminia Upanishad-Brahmana and the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, it is one of the oldest Upanishads, dating back to the period of compilation of the Brahmana by scientists (beginning of the 1st millennium BC). The Chandogya Upanishad is associated with the Sama Veda and is ranked ninth in the muktika canon of the 108 major Upanishads. It is part of the Chandogya Brahmana (Chapters 2 to 10). Along with the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, the Chandogya Upanishad is the oldest source of the basic principles of Vedanta philosophy. The special significance of this Upanishad in Vedantic philosophy can be judged from references to it in the Vedanta Sutras. Of the surviving commentaries on the Chandogya Upanishad, the most Shankara's commentary is the earliest. Ananda Giri states in his commentary that long before Shankara, a voluminous commentary on this Upanishad was written by Dramidacharya. This commentary, however, has not survived to this day, and very little is known about Dramidacharya himself. Dramidacharya's commentary, in turn, was based on a brief review of the Chandogya Upanishad by Brahmanandi Tankacharya. These two scholars are often mentioned in his commentaries “Vedanta-sangraha” and “Sribhashya” by the Vaishnava acharya Ramanuja.
