This book is a continuation of many years of work begun at the Russian Academy of Sciences more than half a century ago to create a complete, academic translation into Russian of the great national epic of India - the Mahabharata, consisting of 18 books (parvas). A number of translations of this monument have already been published. “Salyaparva” (çalyaparva) or “The Book of Shalya” is the ninth book of the epic. It describes the events surrounding the conclusion of the great battle between the Kauravas and the Pandavas, the main characters of the Mahabharata. It is also the last of the four books (Bhishmaparva, Dronaparva, Karnaparva and Shalyaparva) dedicated to the great battle, which consisted of 18 battles that took place over 18 consecutive days. The main content of the ninth book is devoted to a very extensive description of the last, eighteenth day of the great battle of the Bharatas at Kurukshetra. It is burdened with monotonous repetitions and is enlivened by some legends or other digressions. The publication is equipped with an extensive scientific apparatus and prepared by the wonderful translator from Sanskrit V. I. Kalyanov.

The book was prepared for the series “Literary Monuments”, but was published outside her.
