From the preface by E. Junger to the 1st edition of “In Storms of Steel”: “The purpose of this book is to give the reader an accurate picture of the experiences that the infantryman - rifleman and commander - experiences while in the famous regiment, and the thoughts that while visiting him. The book arose from diary entries cast in the form of memories. I tried to write down my immediate impressions, because I noticed how quickly they fade in my memory after a few days, taking on a completely different coloring. I spent a lot of effort filling out a stack of notebooks... and I don’t regret it. I am not a war correspondent and do not offer hero collections; my intention is not to paint, as it could be, but to describe everything as it really happened.”
