The volume contains a “Chronicle” of post-war events, published by Jünger under the title “Years of Occupation” only ten years after its writing. This was the means, this time too, to elevate the matter of lived and thoughtful experience above the topic of the day, above post-war confusion and vindictive or magnanimous euphoria. Despite his late, Gnostic view of this world, according to which it is impossible to save it, the author still managed to extract from the experience of his life the hope that even in the catastrophic tendencies of modernity, the possibility of a turn for the better is hidden. This Hölderlin understanding of danger and salvation brings Jünger closer to Martin Heidegger and is characteristic of those few European and, in particular, German intellectuals who managed not only to survive, but also to comprehend the fateful events of the history of the past century.
