One of the oldest genres of traditional Japanese poetry, impeccable in form, tanka, is widely represented in this collection: from the Heian era poet Ariwara no Narihira to the democratic poetry of Ishikawa Takuboku at the beginning of our century. The compiler of the famous anthology “Kokinshu” Ki no Tsurayuki gives precise characteristics of the poets included in this collection: “Arivara no Narihira... His songs are like faded flowers: they have lost both color and beauty, but retained their aroma. Funya Yasuhide is like a merchant dressed in silk clothes.” The most famous of the 12th-century poets occupies a significant place in the book. Saigyo. His thangkas are distinguished by their philosophical depth, brightness and freshness of images, and an enthusiastic reflection of the beauty of nature. Saigyō's tanka are arranged thematically, following the example of the Kokinshu anthology.
