The second volume of the series "Byzantine Philosophy" presents to the Russian reader for the first time a translation of the corpus of Letters of the outstanding theologian and philosopher of the 7th century. St. Maximus the Confessor. In this volume of Letters to St. Maximus includes not only those letters of his that were collected and published under this title by F. Combefis and are included in the Greek patrolology of Min, but also a number of other letters, in particular, shedding light on the attitude of St. Maximus to the place of the Roman See in the Church. The vast majority of published letters have never been translated into Russian. The publication of the Letters is preceded by an introductory article by a famous specialist in St. Maxime J.C. Larcher. It should be emphasized that the Letters of St. Maximus are an important source illuminating his theological and philosophical views. They discuss not only classical philosophical questions, but they also testify to the specific understanding of St. The maxim of the basic terms of Christian philosophy, such as “hypostasis”, “essence”, “energy”, “hypostatic peculiarity”. In addition, Letters of St. Maximus is a most valuable source for understanding his ascetic teaching, the teaching of love for God and neighbor, as well as a source on the history of the Church and Byzantium in the 7th century.
