The well-known work of the moral and ascetic nature of the Monk Maximus the Confessor (580–662) “Chapters on Love”, or “Four Hundreds on Love”, is dedicated to a versatile patristic understanding of the highest Christian virtue - love of God and neighbors. St. Maximus indicates ways to achieve true love through purifying one’s heart and acquiring virtues, as well as obstacles that arise along this path - passions and vices, and ways to combat them.
