Edogawa Rampo (real name Taro Hirai) is the founder of the detective genre in Japanese literature of the 20th century, who transferred the best techniques of the classics of this direction (Edgar Allan Poe, Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie) to the national soil. Like Edgar Poe, thanks to whom the writer’s literary pseudonym appeared, Edogawa Rampo has works where there is a place for the irrational and terrible. Such are the stories “The Magic Spell of the Moon”, “The Armchair Man” and others. The main character in many of the author’s works, detective Kogoro Akechi, defined the main method that helps him in his work: “To solve a crime, you don’t need puzzling riddles and ingenious machines... you need to be able to come up with a question.” This seemingly simple method has made many literary detectives famous along with their creators, and we can safely add Kogoro Akechi and Edogawa Rampo to this list.
