Haim Grade's novel "Humanless" (1961) is about the fate of a young woman, Merle, whose husband disappeared in the war. According to the Law, an aguna, a married woman who is separated from her husband for any reason, does not have the right to remarry. In this dramatic tale, Merle becomes the victim of a confrontation between two rabbis. One fulfills the dictates of the Law, and the other listens to the voice of conscience. Gradually, the conflict develops into a tragedy, taking place against the backdrop of the established way of life of Vilna Jews.

Роман "Безмужня" Хаїма Граде - це справжня перлина літератури, яка порушує складні питання про любов, вірність та моральні дилеми. Історія молодої жінки Мерл, яка опинилася в пастці через зникнення чоловіка на війні, змушує задуматися про глибокі соціальні та релігійні аспекти життя. Конфлікт між рабинами, один з яких дотримується суворих законів, а інший слухає своє серце, створює напружену атмосферу, яка тримає читача в напрузі до самого кінця. Книга не лише розкриває особисту трагедію Мерл, але й відображає більш широкі проблеми, з якими стикаються жінки в суспільстві. Хоча переклад тексту в деяких місцях може бути не зовсім ідеальним, це не зменшує сили та емоційності історії. Рекомендую цю книгу всім, хто цінує глибокі, зворушливі та інтелектуально насичені твори.
