The collection of short stories “The Synagogue and the Street” by Chaim Grade, one of the greatest prose writers of the 20th century who wrote in Yiddish, includes four works about the life of the Jewish community of Vilnius in the period between the world wars. The story “Grandfathers and Grandsons” tells how the Torah and its study connected different generations of Jews and how, under the influence of accelerating time, this connection gradually became thinner. “The Court of Leiba-Leizer” is a story about the clash and struggle in neighborly, family and religious relationships between people of different views on the Torah - as a prohibition and as a blessing. “The Oath” is a story about the search for personal and family happiness in the light of the Torah - despite one’s own fears and the prejudices of others. The last story is about a rabbi, tormented by resentment at her fiancé, a famous Torah scholar, who rejected her many years ago, and ambitiously guiding her current rabbi husband. In Grade's stories, the morals, social and religious life of Vilna, and the unique spiritual atmosphere of that time come to life.
