André Maurois, a classic of French literature of the 20th century, the author of famous novelized biographies of Dumas, Balzac, Victor Hugo and others, is considered a true master of psychological prose. His novel “The Promised Land” is published in Russian for the first time. The writer again touches on the same topic, that in the famous “Letters to a Stranger” or “The Vicissitudes of Love,” namely, “the science of tender passion.” The heroine of the novel, the lovely dreamer Claire, is repelled by the physical side of love and at the same time attracted. However, the attraction that the stronger sex feels for her seems vulgar and almost vulgar to her. Labeling her acquaintances, the young woman does not understand that she is focused only on her own feelings, poems and diary entries. Claire's trouble is her inability to penetrate into the inner world of loved ones, in the belief that mutual misunderstanding is inevitable. And only in extreme circumstances does she manage to go beyond the outlined circle.
