In 1890-1905 the tasks that a classic armored cruiser was supposed to perform boiled down to the following: reconnaissance in force; rapid concentration and coverage of enemy flanks; imposing a battle on the enemy and maintaining fire contact with him until the main forces approach; the ability to conduct linear combat in the same formation with squadron battleships; pursuit of a retreating enemy; independent long-range operations and support for light cruisers. Thus, armored cruisers, as envisioned by all the major naval powers of the world, were suitable both for cruising and colonial service and reconnaissance, and for use in battle as a high-speed division of the main forces. The second task immediately received preference over the others.
