Confusion (Torikaebaya monogatari) is a 12th-century Japanese novel about the life of aristocratic society. The plot of the novel is the birth of a brother and sister who are like two peas in a pod, and as they grow up, it turns out that the boy perceives himself as a girl, and the girl considers herself a boy. What could come of this other than confusion? How did the woman feel when she became a man, and what made her become a woman again? How did a man manage to overcome his natural shyness? This is a novel about understanding and unwillingness to understand, about compassion and cruelty, about deep and devoted love. Refinement and poetry, tragedy and farce.
