The Tale of Igor's Campaign is considered the first Russian military story. The “Word...” depicts the campaign of princes Igor Svyatoslavich Novgorod-Seversky and Vsevolod Svyatoslavich, from the Olgovich family, against the Polovtsy, which took place in 1185. In the previous, victorious campaign against the Polovtsy, undertaken by Svyatoslav Vsevolodovich and a number of Russian princes in the winter of 1184, Igor was unable to take part due to weather conditions. So, Igor’s campaign in 1185 is a kind of revenge. The history of Igor Svyatoslavich’s campaign is described in the ancient poem “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign” - an outstanding monument of ancient Russian literature, a work imbued with the strongest and most tender love for the Motherland. Condemnation of princely strife is the main idea of the poem. The theme of Igor’s personal fate is introduced into the outline of the poem by his wife Yaroslavna’s lament for him. Her cry for her husband, the cry of a Russian woman, grieving not only for her husband, but also for all his soldiers, throughout the entire Russian land “from discord in distress” “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign” is the first ancient Russian monument that attracted the attention of Russian writers. V. A. Zhukovsky completed the first Russian literary translation of “The Lay...”
