Agnon connects the incompatible - Orthodox Jewry and Europe, Berlin with Buchach and Jerusalem, medieval exegesis with a modernist novel, but the world he describes is devoid of internal harmony. But although human loneliness is endless, hope for the future restoration of the integrity of the broken world is also alive.
