“The Traveler Who Came to Spend the Night” is the most important novel by the classic of Jewish literature of the 20th century, Nobel laureate Shmuel Yosef Agnon (1888–1970). The hero of the novel, whom the author endowed with his own characteristics, returns after the First World War to his native Galician city, where he spends almost a year in vain, sometimes comic, and more often tragic attempts to revive the former religious life, destroyed by the whirlwinds of modernity - wars, disasters, suffering, loss of faith — and standing on the verge of final extinction.

Його спроби відродити релігійне життя в рідному місті, яке зазнало величезних змін, сповнені як комічних, так і трагічних моментів, що робить роман багатогранним і емоційно насиченим. Читач відчуває глибину переживань героя, його роздуми про віру, традиції та ідентичність. Хоча переклад тексту іноді має недоліки, це не зменшує загальної цінності твору.
