"The Spy" is a novel that occupies a special place in the diverse, multi-level work of V. Nabokov. Almost for the first time here, Nabokov's prose, usually coldly elegant, becomes nervous, choking, and angular. Does expressionist aesthetics dominate here over the “eternal” theme of the emigrant tragedy for the writer - or, on the contrary, does the melancholy of “Russia in Exile”, which has broken out of the past and lost hope for the future, set the uneven, “jerky” rhythm of the narrative?
