At the end of November 2009, the world premiere of the last, still unpublished, novel “Laura and Her Original” by the famous Russian-American writer, one of the classics of twentieth-century literature, Vladimir Vladimirovich Nabokov, will take place. The Russian edition of the book will appear after the release of the American and English editions, scheduled for release on November 17, 2009. The ABC-Classics Publishing House acquired exclusive rights to publish the novel in Russia. The publication is carried out within the framework of an agreement with the writer’s son Dmitry Vladimirovich Nabokov, owner of the international Vladimir Nabokov Estate of Vladimir Nabokov. For a long time, the manuscript of Vladimir Nabokov’s unfinished work was kept in one of the safe deposit boxes in Switzerland and could have been destroyed, which is exactly how the author ordered to dispose of it shortly before his own death. And now, more than 30 years after the death of Vladimir Nabokov, the writer’s son Dmitry, after many years of reflection, decided to publish this, in his opinion, “brilliant, original and potentially revolutionary” thing, which represents “the most concentrated quintessence of his father’s creativity.” According to experts on the writer’s work, the new novel is even more revealing than his sensational bestseller “Lolita,” which brought him scandalous fame in 1955. Nabokov’s last work, namely 138 index cards covered with writing by the author’s hand - only a sketch of an unfinished novel, on which the writer worked in the last years of his life. The contents of the manuscript are kept in the strictest confidence, however, fragments of “Laura and Her Original” were seen by Nabokov’s biographer Brian Boyd, in whose words, “this is a masterpiece of technical skill , just like Shakespeare’s later works, where he very intently expands the boundaries of his personal method.” The text of the novel “Laura and Her Original” will be published in two versions: 1. Mass edition. Format 70x90/32 The edition includes the Russian text of the novel with the numbers of the cards from which the translation was made indicated in the margins. The book also includes two articles. In his preface, the writer's son Dmitry Nabokov tells why he decided to publish the novel against his father's will. In the afterword, translator Gennady Barabtarlo tries to explain the meaning of the novel’s composition, paying special attention to the order of the cards adopted by Dmitry Nabokov and the literary consultant, the order in which the reader can get acquainted with the text of the novel.
