Anya in Wonderland is a completely unique book. It is difficult to say whose talent - the author or the translator - sparkled in it with more facets, shone brighter with the subtlety of humor, the originality of word play. Almost a century and a half ago, on a sunny summer day, during a boat trip along the Thames, Oxford University mathematics teacher Charles Lutwidge Dodgson told ten-year-old Alice Liddell and her sisters a fairy tale, which he later published under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. Probably, there was some magic involved here, because this fairy tale firmly wins the hearts of everyone who heard or read it. Today, the adventures of the inquisitive Alice are known in all corners of the world. Almost a century ago, the English writer’s fairy tale was translated into Russian by the now world-famous, and then still young, Vladimir Nabokov. He managed the seemingly impossible: to organically immerse Carroll’s text in the elements of Russian life, Russian speech. So the English girl Alice got a Russian sister named Anya. The same thing happens to her as to Alice in Wonderland - only in the Russian way.
