The world-famous chivalric poem by Torquato Tasso (1544–1595), dedicated to the events of the First Crusade, which ended with the capture of Jerusalem (1099). The grandiose monument of the late Renaissance is published in a new translation by Roman Dubrovkin, made in rhymed octaves in compliance with the stylistic features of the Italian original. In his work, the translator relied on the text of the poem, verified from manuscripts, which was inaccessible to his predecessors. For the first time in three centuries, the famous epic appears before the Russian reader without distortion and leveling caused by the intervention of church and secular censorship.
