They performed rituals that, in the eyes of foreigners, were strange and cruel. They fought, made peace, raised children. They worked in the fields and harvested crops. They drank homemade palm wine and had fun on holidays. And then the Europeans came - with the intention of teaching the “black savages” to live like whites, believe like whites, and raise children like whites. Strong civilized people, ready with an iron hand to make the people of the Nine Villages happy. But who and when in this world managed to make someone happy by force?
