In “Notes on Muscovy” the reader is presented with Russia during the time of Ivan the Terrible. The work is unusual in that it was written by... a tsar’s guardsman. In the historical tradition, it is customary to consider the guardsmen to be the blind tool of the tyrant king. The adventurer Heinrich von Staden (1542 - after 1579) destroys these stereotypes.
