The second volume of our publication includes the following sections: 1) a selection of memoirs about historians, 2) studies of the vocabulary of the published monument and the symbolism of the Oprichnina, 3) comments on the texts, 4) a reference apparatus, which includes lists of abbreviations, references, and indexes. The brightness of Staden's work with its “negative charm” has always provoked his researchers to adequately emotional perception. Therefore, the publishers decided to preface the main sections of this volume with a selection of memoirs about historians - Ivan Polosin and Fritz Epstein, to whom this study and publication were dedicated, and Pavel Smirnov, who, like S. B. Veselovsky, saved the honor of Russian science during the period of Stalin’s praise of the oprichnina. We were unable to find memories of I. I. Polosin, and biographical information about him can only be gleaned from the introductory article by L. V. Cherepnin to the collection of works of the first publisher, Staden. Therefore, we limited ourselves to publishing a fragment dedicated to him from the memoirs of A. A. Zimin, who listened to Polosin’s lectures at the Central Asian State University in Tashkent in 1942. The epic of publishing a new translation of the works of Heinrich Staden, due to circumstances, including insurmountable ones, dragged on for several decades (1967, 1996, 2007–2008), ended - after the first volume of this publication had been delivered to the printing house - with a somewhat unexpected meeting with Fritz Epstein’s student Professor Berndt Bonwetsch, at that time director of the German Historical Institute in Moscow, and his kind consent to write memoirs about the German publisher of the works of the “famous” guardsman of the tyrant Tsar Ivan the Terrible (in the original language). Therefore, the second volume includes these memoirs. They clearly show how, from the Middle Ages to the present day, the history of Russia and Germany, the science of this common past and the fate of private individuals, honest scientists and patriots of their countries were closely and contradictorily intertwined.
