A monument to the genre of “war stories” (“gunki-monogatari”), “The Tale of the Troubles of the Heiji Years” (“Heiji-monogatari”, 13th century) describes one of the rebellions that shook Japan in the 12th century. - Rebellion of the Heiji years (1159). This story precedes the famous “Tale of the House of Taira” and is one of the most significant literary monuments of its time. In addition to descriptions of the political events themselves, this story contains extensive data about the worldview of the inhabitants of medieval Japan, their way of life, and methods of conducting military operations. This publication represents the first translation of the oldest version of “The Tale of the Troubles of the Heiji Years,” which had not previously been translated into European languages.
