The first half of the 20th century, along with turbulent political and social phenomena, was marked by a surge of creative activity - the birth of new genres in painting, music and literature. Emerging art forms fought their way into eternity, overcoming outdated principles and outdated conventions. Many writers, breaking established norms, boldly experimented in literature, and their books eventually took their rightful place in the history of literature. Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) today is a recognized classic, a Nobel laureate in literature, but at first his works surprised readers a lot with their unusual combination of restraint of style and psychological sophistication. Hemingway’s work was innovative in many ways. The distinctive features of Hemingway's prose are its emphasized objectivity, i.e. absence of author's judgments and conclusions, the work of thought and soul must be done by the reader himself. The heroes of his books live, talk - sometimes, at first glance, about nothing. It is thanks to these techniques, invisible to the inattentive reader, that the emotional richness of the text is created, the feeling of tragedy experienced by the characters, which is only emphasized by the background of “empty” conversation and the minimal use of epithets, metaphors and other literary devices. Hemingway is called the creator of a literary style that changed the attitude towards literary language (sometimes called “telegraphic”). The writer always followed his credo, formulating it once and for all: “This is the simplicity of language and thought. It is artless and free from conscious literary effort... The writer’s style should be spontaneous and personal, his images rich and full-blooded, his words simple and energetic.” Hemingway developed a formula for success as a writer: “You should write only if it brings you joy.” He himself did not consider himself a great writer, but during his lifetime he was recognized as one of the greatest creators of our time. The special attractive power of Ernest Hemingway’s works lies in the fact that they all teach to love life. And they owe this to his faith in the inviolability of the main values: goodness, intelligence, honesty, sincerity, generosity. This man lived obeying only his inner voice, and he owed everything he achieved in life to himself. It is impossible to determine where the line was between a writer suffering from the imperfections of the world and a person whose heart was filled with love and compassion for all living things.
