In 1929, a global economic crisis broke out, hitting America hardest. The Prosperity Society was on the verge of complete bankruptcy. Decisive steps were urgently required, radically different from what had been practiced before. In this difficult situation, the political star of Franklin Roosevelt (1882-1945), who had become disabled a few years earlier, rose. However, the illness did not interfere with his political career. In 1932, Roosevelt was nominated as a candidate from the Democratic Party in the presidential election, which he won convincingly. He proclaimed the “New Deal,” which took into account the latest developments in economic science. Roosevelt's program provided for active government intervention in the economic life of the country. The President tried to lead the United States out of the crisis through the restoration of heavy industry through large-scale public works. The measures taken by Roosevelt helped create new jobs: the number of unemployed fell, and with this peace and tranquility returned to the cities. A team of economists at Columbia University created by Roosevelt developed a number of laws - on public safety, on employment, and on state credit policy. All these measures calmed people down and revived their hope in the coming revival of the country. The semi-paralyzed American economy began to gradually recover. The presidential elections of 1936 showed that Roosevelt's policies met with American support: he was re-elected to a second term by a huge margin. Americans recognized Roosevelt as a leader they could trust. By the time the United States entered World War II, the American economy had returned almost entirely to its pre-Great Depression state. The war created the most favorable conditions for the United States to further increase its economic power. Roosevelt masterfully took advantage of his country's geographic location. The distance of the United States from the theaters of war allowed the United States to develop heavy industry and trade weapons with the warring parties. At the same time, the United States was almost spared from the scourge of war. If we take into account the terrible human and material losses suffered by European and Asian countries during the war, one of its main results becomes obvious: the United States has become the most powerful power in the world economically, militarily and politically. Americans appreciated Roosevelt's skill in governing the country. In 1944, he was elected President of the United States for the fourth time in a row, which is unprecedented in the history of the country. Roosevelt was in power during a period of global upheaval that followed one after another. And he made full use of the historical chance given to him by fate. In most political battles, Roosevelt managed to prevail. Under his leadership, the country, having recovered from a severe shock, took a leading position in the world.
