The enterprise was started with a single external goal: to open up for our young writers the opportunities achieved in the West, far superior to anything known in Russia. The work lasted five years. About forty pages out of the existing six hundred or so were translated. Sensitive help could be obtained from Annotations to Finnegans Wake (Roland McHugh. Annotations to Finnegans Wake. 1991. The John Hopkins University Press). These Annotations contain references to approximately sixty languages and jargons used by Joyce. The question of transmission routes arose, and it was not resolved in the same way in different parts. That is why we had to abandon the usual term “translation” and replace it with a broader “arrangement”. Let the reader judge the rest. Henri Volokhonsky
