"Until Now" (1952) is the last novel by the most important Jewish prose writer of the 20th century who wrote in Hebrew, Nobel laureate Shmuel Yosef Agnon (1888 - 1970). The storm of the First World War overtook the hero of the novel, in which the author’s features are discernible, in a cheap Berlin boarding house. The desire to help the widow of an old friend forces him to hit the road. He goes to Leipzig, then to the small town of Grimma, returns to Berlin, where he wanders around in search of shelter, thinking about the people he met, the horrors of war, the intertwining of human destinies and his own mysterious destiny in this world. It might seem like an unassuming story, but there is so much hope and bitterness in it, it is told with such irony and sad wisdom that it remains in the memory for a long time - sometimes with an exact phrase, sometimes with a deep thought, and sometimes the whole thing, like a fortunately given opportunity to talk with a smart person. a person about life and destiny.
