In 1900, the greatest American storyteller and one of the founders of the fantasy genre, Lyman Frank Baum, published the fairy tale book “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” which became a world bestseller. Thus began the story of the Magical Land of Oz, which continues to this day. Baum, who took the position of “Court Historian of the Land of Oz,” managed to tell us fourteen wonderful stories about adventures in this amazing country. From 1921 to 1939, this honor passed to the remarkable American children's writer Ruth Plumley Thompson, who added nineteen more works to the Great Canon of the Oz Chronicles. Seven of them were translated into Russian and published in 2001-2003 on the initiative and under the editorship of Evgeniy Vladimirovich Vitkovsky. In the Emerald City The Scarecrow is very upset when Professor Jugelius tells him that he has no ancestors and the family tree, so the Scarecrow goes to the cornfield where Dorothy Gale once found him, hoping to learn something about his “roots.” When he does not return for breakfast, Dorothy and the Cowardly Lion, alarmed, go looking for him. On the way they meet an elderly knight, Sir Cofus of Copus. They also come across the Dubious Dromedary and the Camel. Together, while searching for the Scarecrow, they find themselves in various interesting adventures. In this novel, the Scarecrow discovers that in the previous incarnate he was a man. In particular, he was the emperor of the Silver Island, a kingdom located deep underground in the Land of Munchkins, where people who closely resemble the Chinese live. When Dorothy first discovered the Scarecrow (in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz), he was hanging from a pole in a cornfield; It turns out that this pole goes deep underground to the Silver Island. The Emperor of the Silver Island was turned into an onion by enemy magic; this magical bulb sprouted and a giant pole grew from it, stretching to the surface of the Earth. When the farmer hung his effigy on a pole, the spirit of the transformed emperor entered the Scarecrow's body, reviving him. The Scarecrow digs the earth with a shovel near the pole, falls through and slides along the pole to the Silver Island. The islanders welcome him like an emperor who returned to save his people. After being the Ruler of the Silver Islands for some time, the Scarecrow decides to return back to the Land of Oz and continue his carefree life there. The islanders, however, do not allow him to leave, and hatch a plot to return the Scarecrow back to the human appearance of an 89-year-old man. Dorothy and her friends reach the Silver Isle, rescue the Scarecrow from the islanders, and escort him back to the Emerald City. Sir Kofus, Camel and Dromedary become residents of the Emerald City. * Note: Sir Kofus and Camel return as main characters in The Yellow Knight of Oz. Source: https
