“The beginning of literature is folklore recorded in writing,” argued Vladimir Propp. In France, folk poetry formed the basis of all genres of professional literature. In this book, the famous poet and translator Mikhail Yasnov collected examples of the most popular genres of French folklore, namely: children's songs, folk poetry (primarily lyrical songs), Breton ballads (which played a huge role in the development of all European lyrics), as well as two main genres urban folklore of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance - fabliaux and farces as the most significant poetic phenomena of “grassroots” culture.
The text of the book was translated from the original language using an artificial intelligence program. For the most part, the translation of the text is of very high quality, but in some cases, due to the imperfection of the technology, there may be incorrect phrase translations in the text, as well as single words and expressions may not be translated.
