"Names of Parisian Streets" is a guide of a special kind. He talks about words - those words that are written in white and blue on plaques hanging on the walls of Parisian houses. The book outlines the history of the names of Parisian streets, squares, bridges and embankments. Behind each name is either an episode of French history, or a picturesque detail of Parisian everyday life, or a forgotten layer of the French language, and most often both, and the third at once. If you translate these names, it turns out that in Paris there are the streets of Cabbage Leaf and Kaplunovaya, Paromnaya and Pechnaya, Fishing Cat and Beautiful View, and this view opened from a hill that was formed from centuries-old garbage. The book will be interesting and useful not only to those who walk around real Paris, but also to those who read books about it, where street names are given not in translation, but in transcription. “Names of Parisian Streets” is a continuation of the book by Vera Milchina, leading researcher at the IVGI RSUH, “Paris in 1814–1848: Everyday Life” (UFO, 2013).
