The last, final volume of Losev’s grandiose research. It is dedicated to two tasks. First: to describe the last stage of ancient thought, namely its transition into the medieval, the destruction of antiquity and the formation of a completely new aesthetics: the patristics of East and West and “transitional” “synthetic” forms: Chaldeism, Hermeticism, Gnosticism. The second task of the eighth volume is to summarize the whole “epic”, in this sense “Itogi” can be considered something like a synopsis of the Institute of Atomic Energy. All the main “plots” are here, final formulations are given, a holistic picture of ancient aesthetics as such is built, a system of its categories is both briefly in its history and in essence.
