The Tale of the Adventures of Arthur Gordon Pym is the only completed novel by the father of thrillers, Edgar Allan Poe. The author himself tried to pass it off as a real document, because the novel begins as an ordinary story about sea adventures. All the more strange and terrible are further events that lead to a quick end, saturated with the horror of the inexplicable. And although during the author’s lifetime critics called the novel a “failure,” it became Poe’s most translated work. The translation into French was made by Charles Baudelaire. Another Frenchman, Jules Verne, wrote a sequel to the novel called The Sphinx of Ice. H.G. Wells called “The Tale...” one of the three books that especially struck his childhood imagination. HP Lovecraft's The Ridges of Madness is full of allusions to the adventures of Pym. The novel is published in G. Zlobin's translation. The stories included in the collection demonstrate all facets of Edgar Allan Poe's talent - an innovator, a humorist and a master of a sharp plot.
