The first volume of the Collected Works of the famous German writer Hans Fallada (1893–1947) includes two novels: “Little Man, What Next?” (1932) and “Who has ever taken a sip of prison gruel...” (1934). These novels are dedicated to the fate of the German petty bourgeoisie, the urban “bottom”. In them, the author talks about the misadventures of “little” people in Germany on the eve of the collapse of bourgeois democracy and the establishment of a fascist dictatorship in the country.

Автор майстерно зображує життя "маленьких" людей, їхні мрії, страхи та боротьбу за виживання в умовах, коли суспільство переживає глибокі зміни. Романи пронизані відчуттям безвиході, але водночас і надії, що робить їх надзвичайно актуальними навіть сьогодні. Хоча переклад тексту здійснено за допомогою штучного інтелекту, що іноді призводить до незначних недоліків, загальна якість та зміст книги залишаються на високому рівні. Рекомендую цю книгу всім, хто цікавиться історією, соціологією та психологією, адже вона здатна змусити задуматися над важливими питаннями людського існування.
