After the war, in the preface to the Italian edition, Camus wrote: “I contrast two positions, not two nations, even if at some historical moment these two nations represented hostile positions. I only hate executioners. And every person who wishes to read “Letters to a German Friend” from precisely this angle, that is, as a documentary story about the fight against violence, admits that today I can rightfully subscribe to every word I say here.”
