“The Fall” is a work of the late Camus, reflecting the essential features of his creative evolution. The story is a confession of a “false prophet,” an intelligent but dishonest man, trying to justify his own moral transgression by what he believes is universal baseness and depravity. His main concern is to justify himself, and his main quality is his inability to love. In “The Fall,” Camus commits reprisals against his own worldview. The story was first published in Russian in 1969 in the magazine “New World”
