“Christina Hoflener” is the second novel by Stefan Zweig, written in the 1930s, discovered in the writer’s archives and published only 40 years after his death. The very young Christina Hoflener ekes out a semi-impoverished existence in a small Austrian village. The future promises her nothing but dull work at the local post office, caring for her sick mother and a meager salary. However, suddenly everything changes. An aunt—a former kept woman who managed to marry an American millionaire—invites her niece to join her at a luxury Swiss resort. It seems that the whole world falls at the feet of a village girl, showered with favors and gifts from a generous relative. But how long did her happiness smile on her?.. The plot of the novel is the basis of the film “The Hops of Transfiguration”, shot by the master of French cinema, Edouard Molinaro. And for the film “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” according to the director, the description of a luxury hotel in Switzerland was taken from the text of the novel. The collection includes “The Chess Novella,” as well as the short stories “At Twilight” and “Leporella.”
